Built by PC Construction and designed by Freeman French Freeman of Burlington, Vermont, the new center meets four critical objectives for the growth of Saint Michael’s, ranked as one of the top Catholic liberal arts colleges in the country: provide new space for student activities, upgrade the existing quad dorms, create additional residence space and improve visual appeal of the campus to enhance student recruitment.

Key features of the $30 million project include a 40,000-square-foot multifunctional student center and 43,000-square-foot residence hall, each built with highest efficiency design using energy modeling software to make best use of the energy supply. The HVAC systems, which use a geothermal heat pump system installed underground in front of the Saint Michael’s College Library, contribute to this sustainable project.

Additional benefits of the project include linking the existing Joyce and Ryan Halls, as well as the new Quad Commons Residential Hall, to the Dion Family Student Center to provide over 900 students with interior access to the Dion Center.

“We’re very grateful to PC Construction and the hundreds of others who made these great new spaces possible,” said John J. Neuhauser, president of Saint Michael’s College. “Students now have much needed places to meet, talk, study and learn from each other. We have every hope that these areas will inspire and ignite great learning.”

“The great partnership between our construction team, architects Freeman French Freeman and Saint Michael’s College resulted in this incredible building,” said Jay Fayette, senior vice president at PC Construction. “We were struck by the overwhelming support here on campus, from the students who brought us coffee, to the collaboration with Saint Michael’s college architect Jim Farrington, who was pivotal to the success of this project. We are so pleased to have contributed to a building that will help strengthen this already very strong community.”
