MONTPELIER, January 02, 2008 – Governor Jim Douglas today announced $180,000 in 16 matching grants to projects for the restoration and preservation of historic buildings across Vermont.
“Historic preservation is an important part of keeping Vermont a special, vibrant place to live and work,” Governor Douglas said. “By partnering with state government, the owners of these buildings can invest in saving them, both for the current enjoyment of residents and visitors and for future generations as well.”
The grant program, administered by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, provides owners of historic buildings with matching funding of up to $15,000 for a variety of capital repairs.
Buildings must be on the National Register of Historic Places or eligible for listing, and grant requests are reviewed by the Vermont Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, a group of volunteers appointed by the Governor whose members include experts in archeology, history, and architecture.
In making decisions on funding, the Council prioritizes projects based on several criteria, including those most in critical need of repair.
Two projects in Rutland received grants, the Paramount Theater for repairing and restoring the historic metal cornice on front façade and the Chaffee Art Center for repairing its chimneys, roof and windows.
Food Works at Two Rivers Center in Montpelier received $15,000 to repair and replace posts in the barn and the ell, and the Slab-Log House in Isle LaMotte got a similar amount to restore and chink logs, install new windows and doors, and replace gable cladding.
In southern Vermont, the Arlington Community House received an $8,000 grant to repair its slate roof and chimneys, while Southern Vermont College in Bennington was awarded $5,000 to reconstruct the flat roof and re-point masonry on the Carriage House.
